Hiring Marine Mechanics
Most marinas of any size have one or marine mechanics on staff. You can also check for marine mechanic repair shops in your local area, and as your boating friends for recommendations. If you've had your boat surveyed recently, your marine surveyor is like to be a good source for recommendations, as is the boat dealership or yacht brokerage you purchased your boat through.
Be sure to ask your marine mechanic what experience and training he has had. Most marine mechanics attend training programs provided by the major marine engine companies, such as Yamaha, Honda, Yanmar, tohatsu, and Suzuki. They may also have technical training from an accredited mechanic school. Ideally, look for a mechanic who has specialized training and extensive experience in working on the type of engine your boat has.
Fees and Billing
Be sure you and the mechanic are in agreement on the work to be done and the associated costs before the work is done. Just as with almost all types of repair work, the extent of the work and the exact costs may not be known ahead of time; you should ask the mechanic to get your authorization for any repair work that will exceed 10% of the original estimate.
Boat Engine Warranty Repairs
If your boat's engine is still under warranty, contact the dealership or brokerage where you purchased the boat. They will have their in-house mechanic do the repair work, or arrange for it to be done elsewhere at their expense. Be sure the work is submitted as warranty work, and ask the dealership to get your authorization before any work is done that is not covered under the warranty. If the dealership isn't cooperative, contact the manufacturer of the boat or engine for assistance.
